Our DIY Backyard Shed Build: Making Room Beyond the Garage

You know your garage has officially become a storage unit when you look around and realize there’s room for just about everything except a car.

That’s the starting point for this project.

Between tools, supplies, and all the things that need a home somewhere, the garage can fill up fast...and when you love DIY, there always seems to be another project...and more stuff that comes with it.

For this backyard project, I took on assembling a storage shed. From the platform to the wall panels, roof, and finished interior, this transformation was all about creating a useful space beyond the garage.

Starting With the Space

The project began with me building a platform in the backyard. Seeing that empty footprint next to the finished building makes the transformation especially satisfying.

It’s easy to get excited about how a project will look when it’s done, but the part underneath matters, too. The base establishes the space where everything else comes together.

If you’re planning your own shed, follow the foundation requirements for your specific model. Also think about access: getting things into storage should be convenient enough that you’ll actually put them away.

Watching the Walls Come Together

Once the wall panels started going up, the project began to look like an actual building.

This is one of my favorite things about sharing DIY projects: you get to see the stages that disappear behind the finished result. Before there’s a completed shed, there are individual sections, an open roofline, a ladder inside, and work happening one piece at a time.

The vertical lines of the gray panels give the exterior a clean, simple look. Against the trees in the backyard, the color feels understated while still giving the building some presence.

Even before the roof was finished, you could see where the project was headed.

Bringing It Together With the Roof

Adding the roof changes the whole appearance of the shed. What started as an open arrangement of panels becomes an enclosed space with a clear purpose.

The reel includes some of the work along the roofline before showing the finished roof. Those are the moments a quick before-and-after can skip, but they’re a big part of the transformation.

If you’re tackling a similar project, let the manufacturer’s assembly instructions guide your process. A short video offers inspiration, but it can’t show every connection, fastening detail, or assembly step.

The Finished Details

The gray siding, dark roof, windows, and door hardware work together without making the exterior feel busy. The windows add character to a building that’s all about function.

Then comes the interior reveal.

With the doors open, you can see the floor, wall supports, roof structure, and daylight coming through the windows. That view gives a much better sense of the usable space than the exterior alone.

And honestly, an empty storage space has its own kind of appeal. There’s room to decide where things should go before everything starts piling up.

A Place for the Overflow

Building the shed is one part of the project. Deciding what belongs inside is what makes it useful.

If you’re trying to reclaim garage space, start by identifying the items that don’t need to stay in the garage. Consider how often you use them, how easily you need to reach them, and whether they’re suitable for storage in an outdoor shed.

Planning that before moving everything over can help keep the new space organized. Otherwise, it’s surprisingly easy to recreate the same pile in a different location!

Making Home Work Better

I love a beautiful room makeover, but practical projects deserve their moment, too.

This shed build adds dedicated storage space to the backyard. Looking back at the empty platform and then seeing the finished building is a reminder of how much those individual steps add up.

There’s something satisfying about turning a collection of parts into a useful addition to your home.

If your garage has started looking more like a storage unit, this project might give you a little inspiration to rethink where everything belongs.
